It must have been wonderful for the 2015 graduates to have Michelle Obama speak. She was very gracious, but her candor in mentioning the very specific race and gender biases lobbed against her is worth noting. Her call to action for people to be involved in the community and vote has merit. That’s not the siren call for black women to continue self-sacrificing, but a reminder of the power of involvement for groups that want to elevate their position in society. This was not only a feel-good moment, but one with actionable solutions for the collective. To witness its failure is simply a reminder to not invest in people or situations that don’t invest in you. As the end of the Obama Presidency nears, let’s not forget what a game-changer it was to have African American women in the White House.
