First Lady Michelle Obama’s 2015 Tuskegee Commencement Speech Is A Must-Listen

It must have been wonderful for the 2015 graduates to have Michelle Obama speak. She was very gracious, but her candor in mentioning the very specific race and gender biases lobbed against her is worth noting. Her call to action for people to be involved in the community and vote has merit. That’s not the siren call for black women to continue self-sacrificing, but a reminder of the power of involvement for groups that want to elevate their position in society. This was not only a feel-good moment, but one with actionable solutions for the collective. To witness its failure is simply a reminder to not invest in people or situations that don’t invest in you. As the end of the Obama Presidency nears, let’s not forget what a game-changer it was to have African American women in the White House.

When ‘Feminist’ Sites Use The ‘Plight’ Of Black Women (In This Case Regarding TV Show Scandal) To Fuel White Dominance

Wasn’t that Season 2 Finale of Scandal a jaw-dropper!! They added a whole, extra layer to daddy issues and Liv’s secret family connection Superpowers, didn’t they? Well, we’ve got all summer to TRY to digest that revelation.

In analyzing the projected images of black women in the media, something popped up last week I’d like to discuss. Just call this episode 2,957,931 of the long-running serial: All The Blacks Are Men And All The Women Are White. Did you hear the good news? The lead actress of the hottest tv show going done got herself on the cover of a “major (white) fashion magazine”!! Congrats to Kerry Washington and ELLE. This has NEVER happened before, so let’s celebrate!!!See all the variations of “homegirl finally got a cover” on the Interwebs for reference.

**Scroll down to the end of the post if you want the surprise revealed.

FYI, they did throw her a big party in NYC (see photos below)which isn’t something ELLE does every month.

I’m just curious though, wasn’t Revenge dubbed the hottest show on tv last year?  How many magazine covers has series lead Emily Van Camp done?  Taraji P. Henson is the lone female on Person Of Interest – also hugely popular. Melissa McCarthy has both a successful tv show wrapping its third season (Mike & Molly) AND gets top billing for her film projects. Number of covers? Lucy Liu of Elemental – also a hit. What about the pretty, young stars of the various CW and ABC Family shows getting followed by paparazzi everywhere?

Let’s not forget The Good Wife. This show wins Emmys and has a who’s who of guest stars. Number of fashion mags for series lead Julianna Margulies? She’s arguably the most recognizable of all the actresses listed amongst a general audience. JM was on the ubiquitous series ER and at one time the highest paid actress on tv, turning down a $27M deal to extend her ER run. And I’d be remiss in not mentioning Marishka Hargitay, because hasn’t everyone seen at least one episode of Olivia Benson in Law & Order: SVU? It’s going into its 15th season.

As we see even popular white actresses are also facing an apparent blockade from being queen of the fashion monthly. Funny, I haven’t heard any discussion of it. Have you? Yet, somebody decided to push this meme solely focusing on one particular actress from a certain tv show. WHY??? Let’s dig a little deeper.

Beyonce Bounces & Jiggles For A National Audience And That’s A Good Thing?

I heard about but didn’t watch the Beyonce television special that aired Thursday evening.  I find her music utterly boring and know that no matter how popular she is today (in part due to hard work and her appearance) it will not endure decades from now. Plus her videos offend me. Cheap titillation for the masses works for the masses not for individual enlightenment. It really irritates me to hear people bestow icon status to someone who was at the right place at the right time (after Aaliyah’s death) and positioned accordingly.

So I really hate to admonish some of you but you leave me no choice. I’m all for being free, proud of your body, footloose and fancy free but come on! Yup, it’s time to break out my ruler and rap some knuckles. Honestly many of you should know better. In fact many of you DO know better but no matter. You like what you like. Despite all progressive agenda fighting and declarations of outrage over inequality you simply like to see a black woman shaking her a**. Oh and other women of color too – but hands down it’s black women for the win loss.

Do That Many People Care About The Obama Marriage?

President Barack Obama and first lady Michelle Obama hand out ...

AP

So if you’ve been keeping up with serious political discourse gossip you may have heard that Barack and Shelly O are having their marriage dissected speculated on (again) by a newspaper (New York Times) trolling for more readers. The curiosity factor is said to be weighed heavily on this subject – so much so that it deserves yet another a feature story???

…the Obamas mix politics and romance in a way that no first couple quite have before. Almost 10 months ago, they swept into Washington with inauguration festivities that struck distinctly wedding-like notes: he strode down an aisle and took a vow, she wore a long white dress, the youthful-looking couple swayed to a love song in a ceremonial first dance and then settled into a new house… Sunday NYT

Mmmkay. Wasn’t the book enough already since it came after the Slate series, the coverage of political wives, the Ebony cover stories and countless others?

Guess not!

Now I thought that after nearly one year in office (I know!) some of this “curiosity” would have surely died down by now. So I have one question: why does the Obama marriage generate such interest?
