Old School Friday – You’d Never Guess It, But…

This week’s meme is “I Bet You Didn’t Know I Liked”. I missed a few weeks there but didn’t want to let too much time elapse. I liked all of the Duran Duran side projects even if some of them seem a bit questionable now.
Arcadia -they were very esoteric and worked with Grace Jones!

John Taylor solo song for the film 9 1/2 Weeks. Hey he’s the original JT.

Power Station – They did an excellent cover of the Isley Brother’s Harvest For the World that should’ve been released as a single.

  1. Southland Diva,LOL! I guess I should've never compared the Jonas' to Duran Duran, huh? Looking at it again, it's an awful comparison. At least Duran Duran was uber talented.Metal days…Definitely METALLICA!!! Although I liked Def Leppard and Motley Crue as well, I was definitely a Metallica girl! Cliff Burton (R.I.P) was my man, girl! LOL! I just knew I was gonna snag his mega talented hippie behind (lol)but unfortunately, he died in an accident in 1986 and I never got my chance. I realize he may not be most women's cup of tea but I adored him for some reason._________________________________________Faith,Loose Ends, Manhattan Transfer AND Mica Paris? OMG, you all were all over the place, lol! I wish I'd known you while I was in school because I too, was a lone wolf and believe me, I suffered for it. The few blacks I went to school with were merciless but, I stayed trueto myself (when it came to music, boyfriends, and everything else)and for that, I am proud.More on music:I was never into any of the ones you listed but,I've always loved Moz/The Smiths, Depeche Mode, New Order, and Roxy Music. Bryan Ferry's voice was just insane. It's strange that Depeche, The Smiths, etc were all considered alternative back then. Alternative music today is vastly inferior.

  2. SweetSoulSister: I had a friend who was a few years older than me when I was in High School with a large discretionary income. She had all the Japanese import singles of Duran, INXS and other groups. Plus she liked Loose Ends, Manhattan Transfer and Mica Paris who she introduced me to. It was next to impossible to find another black girl with that type of variety in music tastes. I still play the Planet Earth video every few months just for kicks.missincognegro: Yes they were very cute. Part of the teenybopper appeal. I now know just how grown they were and all that accompanies that as male music stars but back then it was all clean cut and I imagined Nick & I would go shopping at the Mall or something….lol!

  3. When MTV premiered in the early 1980s, I recall the Duran Duran videos. Can't say I was a 'fan', but, they were cute, and cool, and the music was catchy.

  4. OMG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I loved, loved, loved, love….Duran Duran!!! And yes JT was the hotness back in the day!!! I caught Sugartown a few years ago on television. I think 'Seven and the Ragged Tiger' was my favorite album, the videos were amazing!!! Not too many videos like that now.@SweetSoulSisNow there's a comparison I would never have made (I just don't get the Jonas dudes)….but I guess my mom felt the same way about Duran Duran….(though how she didn't like them remains unfathomable to me!!) Metal as in Def Leppard (or are they hard rock now?) or as in Metallica?Peace

  5. Ok Faith. I'm going to confess. I too was a Durannie. 'So Red The Rose' by Arcadia was the best side project. Not at all questionable and in fact, I still rock it every now and then. I am still a huge fan of the first 2 Duran Duran albums in particular. Careless Memories, Is There Anyone Out There New Religion, Hold Back The Rain, etc. etc…. I also loved Power Station's versions of Harvest For The World and (Get It On) Bang a Gong. I was a kid in those days and I was pretty insane about them. Sort of like the little girls of today with the Jonas Brothers. LOL! What's crazy is I went through a Duran Duran phase in the middle of my serious Heavy Metal period. I'm also still a metalhead.

  6. Tracy: Yes I am a proud Durannie. I highly recommend the film Sugartown if you haven't seen it. JT plays an aging rock star & Rosanna Arquette is is wife. Michael Des Barres is in it as well. It was a cute indie film.

  7. AAAAAAAA!!!No you were not a Durannie!! And sorry but I fought over Tigger Taylor!!Thanks so much for the memories!I got Power station and Arcadia both on my mp3 player -- my favorite PS is Lonely Tonight and my favorite Arcadia is Keeping Me in the Dark!
