Inspirational Quotes Series: Harriet Tubman

Every great dream starts with a dreamer. You have within you the strength, the patience and the passion to reach for the stars to change the world.

~Harriet Tubman

One of the things about Harriet Tubman that continues to amaze me is not how she risked her life over and over again to help other people (which defies comprehension) but that she didn’t martyr herself in the process! She put a time limit on trying to rescue others. She famously said she would have freed many more, but they didn’t realize they were enslaved! Years later when she passed she had been living well, owned her home and wasn’t quietly suffering in a corner forgotten about.

This has me thinking about mental prisons and the evil people succumb to when they adapt certain behaviors. And how people become walking, talking zombies who are completely dead on the inside. They may be able to “give good face” in front of some unsuspecting uninfected folks they haven’t attacked – yet – but are recognized by those who see the signs.

They will strike given the opportunity and have a weapon (poisonous messaging) ready. Their victory at damaging you or something/one you care about is not guaranteed – but not for lack of trying. You must protect yourself and separate. No amount of good will or reasoning will appeal to the amoral and unconcerned.

Tubman freed an estimated half a million people forced into a soul-crushing existence, yet was betrayed by those closest to her. Most of us don’t have it nearly as difficult. Let’s be encouraged to make emboldened choices and climb to new heights. Don’t believe in your defeat and ignore anyone who tells you that you’ve lost. Walk the path to victory and own it!

I LOVE Harriet Tubman. I've admired her since I read "Freedom Train" in elementary school. She's my AA woman hero. Thanks for sharing this quote. I think of her at times when I want to motivate myself not to quit. So, I am very happy to read this.
