I Refuse To Call Myself A Beiber Fan, But This Song Is Hot!

I’m loving this song, As Long As You Love Me by Justin Beiber. That would be despite the fact that a) I’m clearly not his target demographic b) I’m not a Twi-Mom/50 Shades of Crap Grey reader c) rarely listen to the radio and d) still thinks he barely looks a day over the age of 12!

I see you Michael Jackson!

So why do I like it? It’s the lyrics! It’s not about sex, partying, thug life or stupidity. It affirms LOVE and DEVOTION. Plus, the current Top 40 is heavily influenced by electronica. Which is also at the direction of Bieber himself, who co-wrote the song and seems to prefer a more PG image (for now).

We’re under pressure,
Seven billion people in the world trying to fit in
Keep it together,
Smile on your face even though your heart is frowning
But hey now, you know, girl,
We both know it’s a cruel world
But I will take my chances

As long as you love me
We could be starving, we could be homeless, we could be broke
As long as you love me
I’ll be your platinum, I’ll be your silver, I’ll be your gold
As long as you love, love, love, love me (love me)
As long as you love, love, love, love me (love me)

I’ll be your soldier,
Fighting every second of the day for your dreams, girl……..

*** It hasn’t gone unnoticed how interchangeable many of these tracks are. This could’ve been a Timbersnlake song (which was intentional). Much like how Taylor Swift’s We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together could’ve been recorded by Avril Lavigne and no one would’ve noticed.

I think this is why Kelly Clarkson raged against her label a few years back, to little avail. She and Beyonce recorded two songs written by Ryan Tedder (Already Gone and Halo, respectively) that sounded very similar for example. Where’s the individualism that made certain musical acts great? Or at least recognizable enough to avoid if you didn’t like them?

P!nk’s career is still going strong. I’ve given up on Jennifer Hudson choosing to record anything of interest. Bieber shows how even newer/younger artists can control their images (mostly) if they have the right team and vision in place.

  1. Wow did you hear that Destiny's Child "Soldier" and "HOVA" aka JayZ reference?? So he's basically telling the girl be the Beyonce to my JayZ. Hmmm….

    1. I think he's referencing the length of the relationship between Bouncy and the Drug Dealer and that they're married. Not my idea of an ideal relationship, but whatever. Justin's break-up with Selena is gossip fodder right now….but at least he's expressed a mature desire for an enduring love.
